The Sassi di Matera cherish a rich and profound history. An old town situated on the peak of a rocky hill, where homes, stairs and rocks blend in a magical painting.
We passed by the town around 5-6pm, the golden hour for all sights and when most streets and alleys start to empty.
This small yet so dynamic Old Town, leaves you breathless for its beautiful views overlooking the valley where the two Sassi, the Sasso Barisano and the Sasso Caveoso meet.
The most remarkable feeling that you get when walking through the old town, is probably the way in which most homes are built upon and on top of eachother. Making you unable to see the entrance door to one home and a hidden balcony of another.
